Local visibility
How to get found by people in your own town
Local search is one of the few marketing channels where a small business can beat a large one, because proximity and genuine local presence count for more than budget. It is also where most of the advice is either a decade out of date or written for businesses a hundred times your size.
Rather just ask someone? Talk to usIn short
Local rankings come down to relevance, distance and prominence. In practice: a complete Google Business Profile, business details identical everywhere, a page on your site for each real service and each area you genuinely serve, a steady flow of reviews, and mentions on local sites. Expect three to six months before it compounds.
What to expect, and when
Typical for a small business starting from a neglected profile and a basic site. Competitive city categories run longer.
- Weeks 1-2 Profile fixes land
- Verification, categories, duplicates and hours can change visibility within days.
- Month 1-2 Consistency and structure
- Details aligned everywhere, service and area pages published and indexed.
- Month 3-4 Movement begins
- Reviews accumulating, local mentions appearing, rankings shifting for less contested terms.
- Month 6+ It compounds
- The three-pack for your core terms in your own area, and steady enquiries rather than spikes.
- Ongoing $50 - $200 / month
- Realistic maintenance: reviews, content, profile upkeep. Agencies charging $1,500+ for a single location are usually selling reports.
What actually works
Do the Business Profile first
It outranks your website for most local searches and it's free. Nothing else on this list produces as much return per hour. Get it verified, categorised and complete before touching anything on your site.
One page per service, not one page listing services
A page called 'Services' listing nine things competes for none of them. Nine pages, each answering the question someone actually searched, each with its own title and its own call to action, competes for nine.
Location pages only where you genuinely operate
A page for each town you actually work in, with real detail — jobs you've done, areas covered, travel time. Thin pages generated by swapping the suburb name are recognisable to Google and to customers, and they can hurt.
Consistency is unglamorous and it works
Same business name, address and phone on your site, your profile, every directory and every social account. It's dull, it takes an afternoon, and it resolves a surprising share of 'why can't anyone find us' problems.
Reviews compound
They influence local ranking, they influence whether anyone clicks, and they give you words to quote. Build asking into the end of every job rather than running occasional pushes.
Local links beat generic ones
The footy club you sponsor, the local paper, the chamber of commerce, the supplier who lists installers, the school newsletter. Three genuine local mentions are worth more than fifty directory submissions.
Write the things customers actually ask
What it costs, how long it takes, whether you cover their area, what to expect. These are the searches with intent behind them, and they're the pages that get quoted by assistants as well as ranked by Google.
Make the phone number tappable
Local searches happen on phones, often standing in the problem. A tappable number in the header and a form that works on a small screen convert far more than a beautifully written page that makes people hunt.
When this isn't your problem
If you serve customers Australia-wide and nobody chooses you based on where you are, most of this is the wrong work — put the effort into content and conversion instead. And if you're in a category where the top three results are national franchises with real budgets, be honest with yourself about which suburbs are winnable.

Common questions
Profile-level fixes can show within days. Genuine ranking improvement is three to six months, longer in a competitive city category. Anyone promising first place in thirty days is describing something they can't deliver.
For a single-location small business, $50 to $200 a month covers realistic maintenance, or a few thousand dollars once to set the foundations properly. Retainers above $1,500 a month for one location are usually buying you reports rather than results.
Only for places you genuinely work, and only if you can write something real about each. Thin pages that swap the suburb name are transparent to Google and unconvincing to customers. Ten honest pages beat a hundred generated ones.
Yes, and the work overlaps heavily. Assistants lean on the same signals — a complete profile, consistent details, corroborating mentions. Local businesses are among the least affected by AI summaries, because people still want to know who they're calling.
